Lily, a 40-year-old woman, leaves her university job in Iowa for a position at Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport, Maine. As she settles into her new life, she becomes fascinated with the home movies of Chase Donovan, a charismatic summer resident of Blue Hill. Lily’s curiosity leads her to visit Chase, and they form a connection despite their age difference and Chase’s marriage to Josephine, who resides in a memory care center in Boston. Their budding relationship takes a tragic turn when Chase drowns during a swim, with Lily present. In the aftermath, Lily grapples with guilt and grief while becoming entangled with Chase’s family, particularly his son Henry. As Lily and Henry develop feelings for each other, complications arise due to Lily’s undisclosed relationship with Chase and the arrival of her ex-boyfriend Andrew. The story culminates at a symposium where Lily, overwhelmed by emotions, publicly confesses her feelings for Chase and her involvement in his death, causing turmoil in her personal and professional life.
