Galenus is the top doc at Castra Vetera, a first century Roman legionary fortress on the Germania frontier, when he meets Marcus, a disgraced legionary architect and siege-works engineer. Marcus is plagued by survivor’s PTSD and the loss of his men with a previous legion, while Galenus has suppressed his love for anyone after his first love, whom he met at the gladiator’s school while training as a surgeon, was killed in the arena at the behest of his scandalized father. Marcus and Galenus tenderly find love in the arms of each other, while facing mutiny, brutal barbarians and a surprise from Caesar’s witch.
